Itinerary

Your driver meets you at the airport with a name board and takes you to your hotel. We keep the first day light so you can rest after the flight. If you land early and feel up to it, an easy evening walk or a quiet dinner is plenty.

After breakfast you have a full day of sightseeing across two very different sides of the capital, with a guide alongside you. In Old Delhi you take a cycle-rickshaw through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in the city, then visit Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, and the Red Fort, the Mughal stronghold that runs through so much of Delhi's history. In New Delhi the pace changes: wide colonial avenues, India Gate, the government buildings, and time for the 12th-century Qutub Minar or Humayun's Tomb depending on your interest. It is a well-rounded introduction to the country.

After breakfast you drive to Agra on the expressway. Check into your hotel and take a break, then spend the afternoon at Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the red sandstone seat of the Mughal emperors, with its palaces, courtyards and views back towards the Taj Mahal. In the evening, head to Mehtab Bagh across the river to watch the Taj change colour as the sun sets, a quieter first look before the main visit tomorrow.

Start early with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the light is soft, the marble shifts colour and the crowds are still thin. Your driver knows the pickup time that gets you there first. Return to the hotel for breakfast, then drive to Ranthambore National Park, one of India's best-known wildlife reserves. Check into your jungle lodge and relax in the natural surroundings. In the evening you can take a nature walk near the lodge or simply rest before the safaris begin.

An early start for your first game drive, with an experienced naturalist who reads the forest and knows where sightings tend to happen. Ranthambore is best known for its Bengal tigers, but you also share the park with leopards, deer, crocodiles, langurs and a lot of birdlife, across a landscape of dry forest, lakes and old ruins. Return to the lodge for breakfast and some downtime. In the afternoon you can head out on a second drive, which improves your chances of a tiger, or visit Ranthambore Fort, a hilltop UNESCO site that looks out over the park.

After the park, drive on to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan and the last stop on the route. The road passes through open countryside and small villages. Check into your hotel and take the evening at your own pace: browse the bazaars for textiles, jewellery and handicrafts, or relax and enjoy the feel of the Pink City.
