Itinerary

When you land at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, a representative from Driver India Private Tours meets you and takes you to your hotel. Check in, settle in and rest after the flight. The rest of the day is free, so you can ease into the city at your own pace before the sightseeing begins. We keep the first day light on purpose.

After breakfast, a full day across both sides of the capital with a guide. In Old Delhi you take a cycle-rickshaw through the lanes of Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest markets in the city, then visit Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, and the Red Fort. In New Delhi the pace changes: wide avenues, India Gate, the government buildings, and time for the Qutub Minar or Humayun's Tomb depending on your interest.

After breakfast you drive to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, watching the landscape change as you head into the desert state. Check into your hotel and take the afternoon at your own pace. In the evening you can explore the bazaars, known for their block-print textiles, jewellery and handicrafts.

A full day in the Pink City. Start at Amer Fort on its hill above the city, reached by jeep, with its mirrored halls, courtyards and long views. Continue to the City Palace, a mix of Rajput and Mughal design, with its museums and gardens, and the honeycomb facade of the Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds. There is also time for Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century stone observatory.

After breakfast you drive to Agra, stopping on the way at Fatehpur Sikri, the well-preserved Mughal city that was abandoned soon after it was built. You can also add the Abhaneri stepwell if you would like. Continue to Agra and check into your hotel. In the evening, head to Mehtab Bagh across the river for a first, quieter view of the Taj Mahal at sunset.

Start early with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the light is soft and the crowds are thin. Return to the hotel for breakfast, then visit Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a main residence of the Mughal emperors, with palaces, halls and views over the Yamuna River. The evening is free, with time for shopping if you like.

Drive back to Delhi and take a short flight to Varanasi, the spiritual heart of India on the banks of the Ganges. Our representative meets you and takes you to your hotel. In the evening you witness the Ganga Aarti, a fire and lamp ceremony held on the ghats, and one of the most memorable sights on the whole trip.

An early boat ride on the Ganges at sunrise, as the ghats come alive with bathers and morning rituals. Later you visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu sites, and Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon. A full day lets you take Varanasi in without rushing.

On the final day of your tour, bid farewell to Varanasi as you board a flight back to Delhi.
