“Planning your Golden Triangle itinerary? It’s the first question almost everyone asks when planning a trip to Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want from the trip. We’ve been running Golden Triangle tours since 2013, and after guiding thousands of travellers through this circuit, we’ve got a pretty clear sense of what works for different types of trips.
This guide breaks down exactly what you can realistically see and do at each Golden Triangle duration — from a tight 3-day dash to a relaxed 7+ day exploration — so you can pick the right length for your trip.
The Short Answer: Your Golden Triangle Itinerary at a Glance
For most first-time visitors, 5 to 6 days is the sweet spot. It gives you enough time to see the headline sights in each city without feeling rushed, while still being a manageable chunk of a longer India trip or a standalone short break.
But that’s not the right answer for everyone “your ideal Golden Triangle itinerary depends on your priorities”. Here’s the breakdown by duration.
Table of Contents
3 Days / 2 Nights — The Minimum
What’s realistic: One full day in Delhi covering the major sights (Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate), an early morning drive to Agra for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then on to Jaipur for a half day covering the Amber Fort and City Palace before flying out or returning to Delhi.
Who it’s for: Travellers on a layover, a business trip with one free weekend, or anyone who genuinely only has 3 days and would rather see the highlights briefly than not at all.
The trade-off: This is fast. You’ll see the three most famous sights in India — the Red Fort, the Taj Mahal, and the Amber Fort — but you won’t have time to wander, to sit in a café and people-watch, or to discover anything that isn’t on the must-see list. Early starts every day are essential to make this work.
Our honest take: If 3 days is genuinely all you have, it’s still worth doing. Seeing the Taj Mahal even briefly is something most people remember for the rest of their lives. But if there’s any flexibility in your schedule, even one extra day makes a significant difference.
4 Days / 3 Nights — Tight But Complete
What’s realistic: A full day in Delhi, a full day in Agra (including both the Taj Mahal at sunrise and Agra Fort, with time for the Baby Taj if you’re an early riser), and a day and a half in Jaipur covering the Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, and some time in the old city bazaars.
Who it’s for: Travellers with a long weekend, or those combining the Golden Triangle with a few days elsewhere in India.
The trade-off: You can now do the Taj Mahal properly — sunrise visit, time to actually absorb it, rather than a rushed photo stop. Jaipur gets a bit more breathing room too. Still a fast pace, but noticeably less frantic than 3 days.
Our honest take: This is the minimum we’d recommend if seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise matters to you — and it should, because the early morning light on white marble is genuinely different from midday.
5 Days / 4 Nights — Our Most Popular Itinerary
What’s realistic: A full day and a half in Delhi (Old Delhi by rickshaw, New Delhi’s colonial architecture, Humayun’s Tomb, Lotus Temple), a full day in Agra with sunrise Taj Mahal and an afternoon at Agra Fort plus the option of Mehtab Bagh for sunset views back across the river to the Taj, and two full days in Jaipur covering the Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, and proper time in the markets.
Who it’s for: This is the itinerary most of our guests choose, and for good reason — it’s long enough to feel unhurried but short enough to fit comfortably into a 2-week India trip alongside other destinations.
The trade-off: Genuinely, very few. You get to see everything the shorter itineraries cover, plus the flexibility to slow down at any point — stay an extra hour somewhere, take a different route, stop for the roadside scene that catches your eye.
Our honest take: If you’re asking “how many days for the Golden Triangle” and have no other constraints, this is our answer. Five days lets the trip breathe.
6 Days / 5 Nights — Adding Fatehpur Sikri Properly
What’s realistic: Everything in the 5-day itinerary, plus a proper stop at Fatehpur Sikri — the abandoned Mughal capital between Agra and Jaipur — rather than a rushed 30-minute photo stop. Fatehpur Sikri is genuinely extraordinary: an entire planned city built by Emperor Akbar and abandoned within decades due to water shortages. It deserves at least an hour or two, and the extra day makes that possible without compromising time elsewhere.
Who it’s for: Travellers with a slight interest in Mughal history who want to see beyond the three headline cities, or anyone who simply prefers a more relaxed pace throughout.
Our honest take: Fatehpur Sikri is one of the most underrated stops on the entire circuit. If you’ve got 6 days rather than 5, this is where the extra day goes.
7+ Days — Time to Extend the Circuit
What’s realistic: With 7 or more days, you can either slow the core Golden Triangle down even further (adding a second night in any city that particularly appeals), or extend the circuit to include another destination entirely. The most popular extensions:
Golden Triangle with Ranthambore (8 days) — Add a wildlife safari at Ranthambore National Park, one of India’s best tiger reserves, between Jaipur and Delhi or as a loop from Jaipur.
Golden Triangle with Udaipur (8 days) — Continue south from Jaipur to Udaipur, the City of Lakes, for a completely different atmosphere — lake palaces, boat rides, and a slower pace.
Golden Triangle with Jodhpur (8 days) — Head to the Blue City for Mehrangarh Fort, one of the most dramatic forts in India.
Golden Triangle with Pushkar (7 days) — Add the sacred lakeside town of Pushkar, particularly special if your dates coincide with the Pushkar Camel Fair in November.
Golden Triangle with Varanasi (9 days) — A flight or overnight train to India’s spiritual heart for the Ganges ghats at dawn — a profound contrast to the Golden Triangle’s monuments.
Golden Triangle with Amritsar (9 days) — North to the Golden Temple and the Wagah Border ceremony — one of the most emotionally charged experiences in India.
Our honest take: Once you’ve got 7+ days, the question shifts from “how do I fit everything in” to “what else do I want to see.” All of these extensions work well, and which one suits you depends entirely on your interests — wildlife, lakes and palaces, deserts, spirituality, or Sikh history and border ceremonies.
A Note on Pacing: One thing we’d add, regardless of how many days you have: don’t underestimate travel time between cities. Delhi to Agra is about 3.5 hours by road, Agra to Jaipur is about 4 hours, and Jaipur back to Delhi is about 4.5 hours. These aren’t long by international standards, but they do eat into your day — plan sightseeing around them rather than squeezing both a long drive and a full day of sightseeing into the same day wherever possible.
Should You Do the Golden Triangle with a Private Driver?
Whatever Golden Triangle itinerary length you choose, we can help you plan it, how you travel between cities matters as much as how many days you have. With a private driver, the drive times above become part of the experience rather than dead time — you can stop at roadside dhabas, pull over for photos, and adjust your departure time based on how the previous day went, rather than working around a fixed group departure or train schedule.
This flexibility becomes more valuable the shorter your trip is. If you only have 3 or 4 days, every hour matters — and a private driver means no hour is wasted waiting for a group or working around someone else’s schedule.
